A while ago a customer came to us with an injection molding project, and like most customers, a budgeted amount for tooling and part price. Just a cursory look told us that we wouldn’t meet either expectation with injection molding. The material cost alone was considerably more than their part price target –even with co-injection. Rather than give up we looked at it from an extrusion perspective. You see, with our multi-layer extrusion capability we were able to capstock virgin material over recycled material and reduce material cost by 60%. We even had enough left over in the targeted price to add an in-line spray of abrasion resistant clearcoat and a colored imprint of their logo. Punching exacting assembly holes helped reduce their costs as well.
